I started the Cottage Cardigan at the end of July and didn't finish until mid-September. This is a very long time for me. The pattern is simple and elegantly written. The yarn was lovely once I got to know it. It's Brooklyn Tweed Loft. But my hands!

When we got back from Spain my hands and wrists were really bothering me. But it started much earlier. In March of this year, I was on a dig site for the weekend and strained my wrists. I didn't think about it then and just kept knitting... Then weeks went by and they were still sore. So I took a break. Not knitting is hard for me. I do it in class, while watching tv in the evening with the family, waiting for kids in pick-up lines, and at events. Pretty much always. But now, my wrists were sore, my pinky and ring finger were often numb. It's bi-lateral. A nightmare in the making.

It got better. I tried to avoid holding things in certain ways, putting pressure on my wrists the wrong way. It became a challenge to figure out all the triggers. I did a little research, but mostly carpal tunnel came up and that didn't match. It would flare up. I would be careful. By August I was really worried. I went to see the doctor who suggested it was cubital tunnel and suggested rest, stretches, and topical anti-inflammatories. Two weeks after that it was getting better, but not if I wasn't resting. Writing, gripping, typing, and even sleeping were problematic. My elbows ached. I went to see a specialist. I went to see a nerve person for a nerve study. I knitted for maybe ten minutes a day after the first two weeks. The upshot was to live with it or have surgery. I'm living, at least for now. There is no evidence on the nerve study of damage yet.

The point is, I had to slow way down in making this. And that's a good thing and a painful lesson. This semester I am taking ceramics and book arts, both of which are diversifying my making significantly. I'm doing different motions with my hands, wrists, and elbows. I think it's helping. I still get the creativity out of me. And now I (finally) have the most perfect cardigan for the Fall.

PS- if you are looking for those K pants, the blog is here.

Aniliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01675732821835432095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519482465202782798.post-86974031400807273882023-09-21T04:40:00.001-07:002023-09-21T04:40:51.439-07:00K pants

Another successful Big Clothes, Small Clothes garment! I made the muslin for these last summer after looking at the Tessuti blog about them and obsessing. They weren't quite perfect and I felt unequal to the challenge of adjusting them (the problem was in the bum. It is hard to see your bum in the garment and make adjustments without twisting and causing more problems.) This year, I've gained a little weight, and when I finally decided to give it a go, the muslin fit pretty perfectly.

I'd seen them made in different printed fabrics and I felt like that might hide imperfections in the fit. The volume of these pants is what drew me in, but I already feel self-conscious about having short, round legs. Our relationships with our bodies are complicated. While sewing gives us a certain amount of freedom, it also forces us to look at how our bodies don't fit pattern blocks. Anyway- I digress, but this is a thing I know we are all confronted with as we sew and make adjustments.

Like an insane person, I picked a complicated grided pattern fabric with about a thousand ways to not be able to match up lines. What can I say, it was love at first sight! Robert Kaufman Essex cotton/linen blend is really great for pants. In the end, I made zero adjustments. I tried to cut the pieces from the same places in the fabric so that whatever happened with the lines, that same thing would be mirrored on the other side. And there are places they match up, but I tried not to be too obsessive over them. I added another grid fabric for the pocket lining because I couldn't help myself.

I'd make these again, a touch longer, in a medium-weight denim. And I knew I could make something similar enough.

I had already made the "I" pattern and knew I liked it. The sleeve structure of the I is closer to the sleeve structure on the inspiration but I didn't want the added width for this version. Going with size 1 of the (little) "i" pattern gave me a better fit at the shoulder. I added a slash and spread to give me about 7 more inches at the hem (and 4-5 at the hip) and extended it to the length in the description from the inspiration dress. Unfourtunatly, I'm short as hell, so I chopped two inches off the front at the end. I didn't bother with the pocket or even buttons because I knew I wouldn't wear this one open and I didn't want to deal with the button process just for looks. The dress has no pockets (horrible, I know!) because I did not think the drape of the fabric could support them.
I'd really like to take a collar making class because they are never perfect. The whole time I was making this dress I was doubting the outcome, but I think it came out just fine. The sleeves don't set in just the way I'd like them to at the back, but again, after wearing the dress, I don't think it is a real problem. The fabric is woven and acts kind of like double gauze but without the crinkly fuss.

The dress was done over two days with just a little stressing that I was making something unwearable along the way. I'm glad I stuck with it.

This is the way I came out, and I love wearing it open like a duster or closed like a dress. The sample was made in white but I had purchased this lovely Noro without a plan and this seemed like just the thing. The little cap sleeves on this are knitting perfection. I wore it in Spain to grab some pictures but the silk was too warm the days we were there. Here's my Ravelry link if you want the details on the yarn and pattern. Just yesterday, I wove in the ends and wore it. I'm afraid to block it.

Specs: The Robinia has been making the rounds. I couldn't see buying the tons of yarn it would take to create the three-strand yarn the designer used, but Becky found this chainette cotton blend, Cantata, that seemed perfect. I've recently realized that making the exact color combination that I liked in the first place is not a bad thing. It means I get the garment I really loved in the first place.

Mods: I made a size XS/S even though I could have made the M according to the designer but everything I knit comes out bigger than expected, even when I gauge swatch right on target. (I think the blocked weight of the garment just is so much more than the swatch is what causes this, but it's just a theory.) I didn't wrap any of my floats and it remains to be seen if I'll regret that.

This pattern requires a lot of short rows, which is fine, but I couldn't knit in class or while doing much else so it took longer than expected. Also, when I got the sleeves I just couldn't take it anymore so only the first set of short rows happened. The sleeves are practically a whole other sweater to knit because they are huge so I made them pretty short to keep them out of the way.

Despite not being a relaxing knit I really enjoy the finished garment. The yarn is light and the fit is quite oversized so it is comfortable like a sweatshirt. I love the wide arm scythes. It's a great pattern, but I would never make it again. I find that I really don't enjoy colorwork anymore. Maybe someday it'll be fun again?

Aniliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01675732821835432095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519482465202782798.post-53956674602305926392019-12-13T05:30:00.001-08:002019-12-13T05:30:05.235-08:00Hello from the other side.

We have had her about a month and half. I asked for her for my birthday. She is a doll. And getting bigger by the moment. I realized I've been under feeding her two days ago and I would swear she put on a few pounds since I upped the food.

I'm having a bit of creative dissonance right now. I love to make things, but I have enough. I love to make clothes, but I am not that great at it, nor do I have the time to get my skills caught up to my ideas.
I've played with a minimalist wardrobe and I've always envied monks and nuns of all religions in the perfection if their uniform. Lots of articles have been floating around recently about creating a uniform for yourself. I'm so attracted to this idea. And yet...
I don't want to get rid of the things I have right now that I like but wouldn't fit into the uniform idea, both rtw items and handmade. And I don't have the budget to go out and just get a new set up (even if my idea of a new set up is 5 t shirts and a couple button ups.) Because I've always tried the uniform kind of thing with the items I already own I just go back to the confusion of most of the items I have.
I have simplified my closet and removed the things that don't work or I don't really love. So, I don't really have that many items left. And I spend a lot of time thinking about each handmade item before making them. So there is that. On the other hand I almost always use stash fabric to create any new items so they aren't necessarily fitting into my ideas of simplicity.
All of these things are so self centered. So unhelpful to the rest of the world, that I hesitate to even write it. I've been thinking about it for a year though, and that is a total waste of effort also.

I made this with scraps left over from other projects. I knew if I just went ahead and started a Winter hat, Spring would show up.
I love the shadows created by cables and it blows my mind that it is so simple to make them. Warm, squishy and mysterious. The second picture shows the truer colors.

I had no idea I was choosing a fabric that so perfectly matches my hair. I am fairly certain that isn't what most fashion editors would suggest. However, it is very pretty and very, very soft and cozy. This is the Cinema Dress by Liesl and Co. I am pretty sure I bought the pattern the day it came out. I had just finished the girl's version for Anjali. I've yet to get a good picture of her in it as she is always so busy.

The fitting on the bodice of this dress is perfect me. The side view is a little wider than I would go for off the rack but I think the front and back views make up for it. The only thing I changed was sizing down two whole sizes. I don't need 4 inches of ease in the bust for a dress with princess seams. Oh, and I omitted the notch at the neckline in this version. Just because Anjali is very grabby and I don't want to make it any easier for her to get her hand in my shirt.... :)

I also bought a red corduroy to make it with. We'll see if that happens. I have spring sewing on the mind. A couple Hemock tees are up next.Aniliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01675732821835432095noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519482465202782798.post-89843668045175846142015-01-21T11:35:00.002-08:002015-01-21T11:35:42.752-08:00Sewing thoughts

Lately I've been thinking a lot about not sewing. Not sewing anymore clothes for myself anyway. I struggle between wanting to have everything handmade and the reality that it takes a lot of time and money and skill that I just don't currently have. I have a lot of things that I finish but aren't really how I'd have liked them. The fit is often off. And you really can't tell until you are done. Muslins help, but it goes back to to time again.

I've been knitting like crazy and really enjoy that process now. I wonder if I just need to take a break from sewing until the kids are older and I can take a garment making class. My ideas are outstripping my ability.

I do have the cinema dress pattern and fabric for it which I'd like to try since Anjali's came out so well. I haven't given up totally yet...Aniliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01675732821835432095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519482465202782798.post-64521715340081917202015-01-20T13:26:00.000-08:002015-01-20T13:26:19.767-08:00Simple raglan tunic

I have to figure out a better way to take pictures of completed garments. It is tough to find a place where the light is good and the background is uncluttered enough. All out walls have pictures hanging.

This is the tunic length of the raglan sleeved shirt from Simple Modern Sewing. I've used this book a lot over the years. I took an inch out of the front but otherwise it is pretty much as written. I have another one cut but just realized I cut one sleeve backwards. I'm not sure there is a good remedy for it as I am out of fabric.

I'm still here. I've been busy. And sick. And parenting. And overwhelmed. I am trying to figure out how to use this space with the time I have. I'm trying to figure out how to live more graciously. I'm trying to find solutions for solution-less problems. How could it be that there are so many of those?

I'm hoping to use this to catalogue completed projects this year. Less words, more images. I've been using instagram a lot. But this would be neater, easier to look back and possibly (?) have details I'd like to remember.
I just don't seem to be able to stop. This morning I finished another Barley for John and already I've started a Clayoquot for Anjali. Today is slightly cool and over cast. I have several hours of work to do while the apartment is empty. And, of course, I had to start a new project? Clearly, there is something just a little bit wrong with me.

Before either of those hats there was a sweater for Anjali completed. I really love the patterns from Tin Can Knits (could you tell?) Even as a total novice knitter I feel empowered to start color work and pick up stitches and use DPN's like I know what I am doing. This sweater didn't come out perfect (nothing has yet! :) but it is perfectly wearable and fits her great. Cute as a button if I do say so myself.

I made her the 2-4 year old size with shorted sleeves. I'm hoping she'll be able to wear it next year with the sleeves at 3/4 length.

I promised myself I'd write something this week. So here I am, trying to figure out what to say. I feel a bit overwhelmed.

I'll start with this- kindergarten has been a roller coaster so far. I've started to fear the phone ringing in the middle of the day. I'm not sure what I expected before E started but it certainly wasn't this. In some ways it is as hard as having him home since we are always thinking up new strategies to help him out in school. I always think we are getting ahead and then suddenly he takes two steps back.

I can tell you one thing. He is different than other kids. Not all other kids but certainly "typical" kids. He cannot control impulses. He reacts so strongly to situations that might go completely unnoticed by others. He is obviously very smart but that isn't enough to be successful without constant support.

I tell myself that is a lesson for me in impermanence. Now is not forever. This reality is only here today, tomorrow may be very different. Of course, that gets me wishing to see what tomorrow will be like (please let it be easier for him! for us all!) but rushing today away does not make tomorrow more beautiful. It only makes today gone, lost and missed. So today we talk over the things that went wrong and the things that went right. We go through the rules to remember (he has quite the long list now.) We hope for understanding on all sides. We love.Aniliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01675732821835432095noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519482465202782798.post-25284568536316615872014-08-07T07:16:00.001-07:002014-08-07T07:16:49.815-07:00Metro TeeA few weeks ago I decided I needed to go to the Oliver + S website and look at patterns. Clearly a bad idea as I wanted to buy most of them. Especially enticing was the t-shirt family pack. A pattern for everyone in the family? Yes, please.

I put the women's together in about three naps. Next time it will only take two since the pattern is already cut and taped. It was really simple. I thought the neck was too tight at first but it is very comfortable on. I also freaked out a bit when putting the sleeves on and matching the curves but then I remembered reading something about attaching knit sleeves on the Collette blog. I can't find the link now but it mentioned dividing the stitches in half and starting at the top of shoulder and heading towards the armpit for each side. Suddenly it was easy. A very satisfying little project.

The fabric is more vintage who knows what from who knows where. I didn't have one bit of thread in a matching red so white it was.

I am looking forward to making them for the kids wand being able to do fun applique before putting the shirt together. Anjali clearly needs a kitty shirt and a doggie shirt. Maybe a chicken one too. :)

A funny thing happens at the end of July or the beginning of August each year. Suddenly I have trouble thinking of anything but sweaters. You'd think it'd be too hot to pick up a crochet hook or knitting needles and handle wool but somehow it isn't. I start thinking of how the little people in my house will be cold in the mornings soon. In need of an extra layer on round bellies and and little arms. How their heads should be covered, their ears kept warm.

It makes sense, really. A sweater does not make itself over night. And now that I am knitting as well, who knows if the project will come out at all? Who knows who it will fit? (okay- I'll admit I am swatching today.)

E received the first thing this year. Using the left over yarn from his baby blanket (which was one of the first things I crocheted!) I used the Barley pattern from the Tin Can Knits Simple collection. (I have both of the sweaters on my list to do next. A Flax for Anjali in a cotton blend and a wool Harvest.) I loved using this pattern and their tutorials. It was easy and quick. I finished it in under a week.

Something weird happened and I was twisting the stitches for the first half. I realized it half way through and fixed how I was knitting. I actually kind of like the texture difference. Can you see it? Any knitters reading and can tell me if it has to do with knitting in the round? I don't think I've done this to other projects so I am wondering how I managed to be so consistent here...

Anyway, it fits the young man perfectly. I am hoping he doesn't loose it on the first day it is chilly. John lost his hat last year so I am thinking of using the pattern again for him. In a different yarn of course, but they would still be a little matching.
Has it been forever since I talked about her? I feel like it. Each day she grows so much you can tell the next day. I think she is two inches taller than a month ago. Suddenly reaching the edge of the counter with her little exploring fingers. Reaching for whatever she can get. Last night she climbed over the back of the high chair and into the seat for the first time. Nothing is safe on the table now.
She signs all the time, learning a new sign every day if you offer them. Yesterday she woke up from her nap and earnestly signed, "Help. Want dog." So very sweet. And out we went to find a neighbor walking a dog to love on.
She loves to walk and find friends at every stop. She squats down and holds her hands out and rubs her fingers together to call to birds and squirrels and cats and dogs to come to her. I will pet you, she promises. I will be gentle. I've never seen another toddler so gentle to animals. So in control of her hands.
What a pleasure it is to spend the whole day with her alone. I feel like I am really getting to know her again. What she likes to do and eat and when she wants to sleep. On her schedule for really the first time of her life. Emerson and Papa are gone all day and it is just us girls. Yesterday to the pool and out with the stroller. In with books and snacks and watching the rain. The day before down to some shops downtown touching the fibers together, blowing kisses to the shop owners as we left each one.
And the kisses. Kisses for you, kisses for me. Kisses for Emerson and Papa and Susie kitty and Fifi. Kisses for her pillow and blow them to all the other friends too.
Now she loves cleaning. Give her a baby wipe and you can just watch for 10 minutes while she does around cleaning. Wipe and wipe and wipe. Until it is shiny.
Always, always, the sweetness of such a love. A reminder everyday that her name means blessing, offering.Aniliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01675732821835432095noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519482465202782798.post-16736040013474055102014-07-24T13:09:00.002-07:002014-07-24T13:09:57.545-07:00Elimination Diet: Wheat and Nightshades

Hello! I've been a whirlwind of summer fun the last few weeks and so I am late getting this update. Wheat week (woot!) went by with no symptoms at all. Then this week I am on nightshades. Thank goodness! That is a long time to go with out tomatoes. I think I am going to be fine there. Next week- Added sweeteners!! We already have a date planned for French Broad Chocolate. Because people- it has been 3 months!!

Our days are flashing by. Today, Emerson went to school for a half day. Next week he'll start for real and he got into an amazing music program so he'll be at school all day. I imagine he'll be bushed at the end of the day. Out OT reminded us to prepare for meltdowns in the first month and to keep our calm so that he can regain his. I might put some signs up for us.

Today is rainy and grey. Perfect and cool. I love days like this, they are such a blessing in the summer. I have a pile of patterns and ideas to work on. I have marketing work. I have house work. But it will all keep a little longer. Yesterday, once the baby (can I call her that still??) was asleep Emerson and I drew pictures and read stories. I left the dishes piled high in the sink. I knew there were only a few more days like this left and it was so much more important to just be with him 100%. It was the right choice. So seldom is there time to just enjoy each other one on one.

And then this morning he came in to wake me up, already dressed (we'd laid out his clothes) and sweet as pie. It was easy to shuffle everyone to the table and into shoes and out the door. Such a blessing. Yesterday he told me, "I'm glad to go to kindergarten. I feel like I am growing up so fast. In just ten years I'll be a grown up!" Oh, yes, my love. But for today, you're my buddy.Aniliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01675732821835432095noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519482465202782798.post-49905881908878496072014-07-02T08:08:00.002-07:002014-07-02T08:08:56.040-07:00Elimination Diet: Gluten

This week I've added gluten back in. No wheat, just other sources of gluten. Because barley is a little harder to have in the house and not share with Emerson I chose to get a loaf of rye bread to experiment with. This was the first time in two months I could eat a sandwich. I'm not even going to explain how big that is for me. My favorite things to eat have always been sandwiches. I even had to get used to the idea that John does not consider a sandwich dinner except occasionally. What??? Took me years to figure that out.

This last few days have been a real pleasure. So far, no side effects. Now I have to wait four more days without it and make sure. But next week is wheat. I'm interested to see how that goes. Corn is definitely out for me. I'm so glad I'm doing this, no matter how hard it has been. I had suspected corn a little but never eggs at all. And for months I've been avoiding gluten and wheat when I felt bad which means subbing lots of corn! No wonder I wasn't getting better.

I have one full month left and I've already learned so much.Aniliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01675732821835432095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7519482465202782798.post-89430276668551885592014-06-29T09:08:00.001-07:002014-06-29T09:08:59.703-07:00The Hawthorn

I've been working on this dress since March. Intermittently, slowly. Trying to do things as well as possible instead of my usual rush job. I even made a muslin and decided to size down, knowing this satin would show every crinkle where the fit was wrong. I am looking forward to finishing the muslin into something wearable too. It'll be fine a size up in a light weight woven stripe. I've put it off because of the buttons I think... There are a lot of buttons.

This is Colette Patterns again. They really write a beautiful pattern. I want to go back and put smaller buttons on the collar to convince it to stay down on both ends and up the men's wear details on it. I didn't have time to get matching buttons before the wedding when I realized that the collar just wasn't going to behave. When my mother in law asked me to be in her wedding I knew I had to find something special. Something pretty and simple and that I could nurse in and it had to be royal blue. I decided it would be easier to make something than find it in a store. Which is true in some ways. I spent (with the pattern) about as much on this as I might have an off the rack item. In the neighborhood of $60 (which of course does not include the cost of my time!)

The satin is a cheap polyester shantung style that I used wrong side out so it would look more like silk. The inside is very shiny. (It actually feels great on the skin, being so slippery.) I wanted a silk dress but couldn't do the $25 a yard price tag (since this pattern calls for 3 yards) and this does the trick for the look and is extremely forgiving in its wash and wear qualities. I could easily wash and wear it every day for months without it showing any signs of aging I think. Oh, the beauties of plastic! I am hoping that I get over the dressy factor and use it as an everyday piece. I know towards autumn I'll pick it more often as the weather cools down. It'll be sweet with a cardigan and boots.

I sewed the skirt placket closed most of the way down so I wouldn't have to align any more buttons after I could wiggle it over my head. Buttons alignment stresses me out. :) The belt I spent an entire afternoon shopping all of downtown Asheville for. I finally got to Paul Taylor and had a belt custom made. Brilliant. I didn't even know you could do that anymore! Perfect color to match my shoes. Perfect hard wear. And the buckle is interchangeable! I'm so excited about this idea....
