A baby cape

Image
The last couple of weeks I have been working hard on a very special gift.  One of the pieces is this tiny baby cape.  Doesn't it just make you want to squeal a little in delight? It has been so fun making it.  Each and every stitch was made while thinking of tiny babies and tiny baby moments.  I thought of the Bug's birth and his first few months. I thought of  what it felt like to hold him for the first time, how the love almost knocks you down.  How you can't help but stare at them when you are supposed to be napping with them.  I thought of how good it felt to be a mama, so much simpler and more natural than I ever expected.  I would like to think I wove that into this sweet little cape and that it will somehow transfer on to the new mama who will be using it soon for her own special, perfect, divine little person. There are a few more items in this set, hopefully I will be back tomorrow with pictures.

Where he is.

I had decided that for this second year of the Bug's life I would only do the monthly update style post every 3 months since (I thought) things would be slowing down for him.  In one way, this is correct.  His physical growth is very slow.  But in everything else, agility, language, reasoning he is rapidly advancing. So this post is as much about me documenting that and what he is doing right now, at 14 months, as anything else.   He started walking just after 12 months and has been fairly steady from day one.  Or maybe I should say, sure of himself.  He falls a ton of times everyday but rarely hurts himself.  You can almost watch him calculating the best way to land on the way down.   He is graceful getting back up most times, easily handles 4" to 5" steps himself and is now capable of going up and down our stairs without assistance (though we do hold his hand most of the time and never intentionally let him have access to the stairs on his own.)  Yesterday he climbe

I made this bread.  I put yeast and flour and salt together with water and this is the finished product.  And though I started at 8am and finished at 2am I only did about twenty minutes worth of work.  It is airy and holey and scrumptious. Can you hear my jaw hitting the floor?  I am so excited.  Maybe I should back up though.  I have tried to make bread more than a dozen times in my adult life and every time was an abysmal failure.  Unless you like rock solid cement made from bread flour.  Even in the bread machine.  Ask Senor, he has watched pretty much all of the attempts and has even been kind enough to try to eat some of them.  Also you should know- I love bread.  Like when I first heard about the Atkins diet I said, "No one would try that, how could you live without bread??!"  The idea of low carb just doesn't make sense to me. For a while we had a friend in the neighborhood who baked amazing bread and we bought some every week and went to his house for bread

June Block - Eat

Image
When I asked Senor what the theme for June was going to be and he said, "Eat!" I didn't quite know what to do. I almost asked him to pick something else. We have been working on the food issues in this house for the last year but recently, it seems to me, there have been more conversations going on under this topic. One of the biggest changes since I started staying home is that I make dinner and so I do most of the grocery shopping and planning. While this isn't a bad thing, per say, it is important to recognize that I like eating a whole lot but I do not like cooking very much at all. I am not terrible at it, I just have very little interest in everyday cooking. I might like to throw something together for a party. But probably not. If it were just me sandwiches, frozen pizza and crackers with hummus would be about all I ate. So it has been great to finally find a few cook books that hold my interest enough to (sort of) follow the recipes. A Year in a V

Craft Hope

Image
This last week I have been rocking my way through a long action item list and feeling very good about it. My whole life is ups and downs of productivity like anyone (?) but I do a whole lot more thinking about doing than actually doing. But when the list gets longer I just have to get to work because it messes with my head space. (Ignore the dirty floor but check out the passed out pooch. So sweet, she wanted to help.) The first thing I had to complete was our donation for Craft Hope . They are organizing the donation of probably millions of towels to help with cleaning animals affected by the oil spill. I don't have a good picture of the finished project because the light was bad. (Which hardly matters. It just looks like stacks of fabric anyway.) I only have this picture of the left overs. Senor (the saint) and I stayed up late one night this week and cut up about 50 t shirts that his company had given us to do this with. That works out to something like 250 washcloth

1593 stitches

Image
In the last couple of days I started a sweater (ravelry link) for Senor. Already, 1593 stitches. And I have done other things including visiting the farm which is growing our food this summer. I can't believe I didn't take any pictures there. The food was so beautiful and we also got to see piglets, peacocks and geese (oh my!) The Bug loved looking at the animals, he wanted to crawl into the area with the piggies so much. I did too. I have no idea how you people eat these creatures! I mean, I do get it, and I don't mean to judge- but pigs are so cute! It is really, really cool to know the women growing our food this summer. The really amazing part is they used to work for me about a million years ago. What they are doing is astounding. The amount of work they are putting in just boggles the mind. I really am so thrilled to be able to be some small part of what they are doing. After showing us around they sent us all home with some broccoli, spinach, salad gre

May Block- Dance

Image
May Block- Dance , originally uploaded by Mr & Mrs Speeed . I think it kind of looks like a head with the brain exposed. Dancing thoughts. I might be crazy though. In other, completely insane crazyland, do you want to know what I am thinking of making while it is 90 degrees outside? A wool coat for E- the one by Oliver + S perhaps... Also, while adventuring in my folks neck of the woods I stumbled upon a yarn shop and bought about a million yards of merino silk blend gorgeousness. And so I have sweaters on my mind too. Um- can you tell me whats wrong with me? I am trying to think of it as planning ahead, but it is hard! The sweaty part of me thinks this is just plain nutty. I am looking forward to this weekend being at home and finishing up a few things. We also are going to our CSA's potluck to open the season. I can't wait for all the goodness to come! Yum!
